TUDCA: How to Dose the Most Powerful OTC Liver Supplement

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, commonly known as TUDCA, has gained popularity in recent years for its potential health benefits, particularly in supporting liver function, gallbladder function and overall well-being. In this article I will share how to dose it correctly to:

  • help regenerate the liver
  • reduce liver enzymes (ALT & AST)
  • improve bile quality
  • improve cholestasis (blocked bile flow)
  • improve insulin sensitivity - fatty liver disease
  • improve hepatitis  

Lastly, I will also share how I have personally used TUDCA when I have had gallbladder discomfort or mild gallbladder attacks.  

UNDERSTANDING TUDCA

TUDCA is a bile salt naturally present in the human body. When ordinary bile salts journey to the intestines, they undergo a fascinating transformation. Metabolized by bacteria into UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic acid), these acids later bind to a taurine molecule, resulting in the formation of TUDCA.

Unlike regular bile salts, TUDCA dissolves in water. Regular bile salts, with parts that dissolve in both water and fat, help break down fats during digestion. But when the liver is stressed, causing a problem called cholestasis, these bile salts can harm cells by damaging membranes and signaling for cell death. TUDCA acts like a protector in this situation, fighting against this harm and keeping cells from prematurely dying.

CHOOSING A TUDCA SUPPLEMENT

Not all TUDCA supplements are the same. In my personal routine, I exclusively rely on Cellcore's TUDCA, considering its superior formulation. I have used Cellcore’s TUDCA to help my dad and my clients break up gallstones. For a more budget-friendly alternative, many of my clients favor Bodybio's TUDCA.

To enhance absorption, both supplements can be opened and mixed with a little bit of water, a beneficial approach if digestion is a concern. TUDCA has an unpleasant taste, but if you find it challenging, try mixing it with a small amount of juice. While my preference is to take TUDCA between meals, adapting to individual tolerance is key—it can also be consumed with meals if that suits you better.

DOSING TUDCA

Liver Regeneration:

  • Dose: As little as 10-13mg daily for 3 months
  • Purpose: Improves liver regenesis rates. Reduces ALT levels.
  • Note: This is potentially the lowest estimate of an active oral dose. TUDCA demonstrates its potency even in lower doses.

Improving Liver Enzymes:

  • Dose: 500-750mg daily for 6 months
  • Purpose: Reduces AST levels.
  • Note: AST, found in various organs, helps pinpoint dysfunction outside the liver when elevated while ALT remains normal.

Optimizing Bile Quality:

  • Dose: 15-20 mg per kg of body weight.
  • Purpose: Improves bile salt composition.
  • Note: Convert your weight to kilograms first for accurate dosage. For example, someone weighing 70 kg would need between 1050-1400 mg of TUDCA daily, taken in divided doses.

Cholestasis (Blocked Bile Flow):

  • Dose: 750mg daily for 2 months
  • Purpose: Decrease liver enzymes by about 48-51% in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Muscle and Liver Insulin Sensitivity - Fatty Liver Disease:

  • Dose: 1,750mg a day
  • Purpose: Improves muscle and liver insulin sensitivity, reversing fatty liver disease.
  • Note: This is the highest dose used for the treatment of fatty liver disease.

Chronic Hepatitis:

  • Dose: 500-750mg daily for 6 months
  • Purpose: May improve hepatitis. 

MONITORING & ADJUSTING

Regular monitoring of liver function markers and other relevant health indicators is essential when using TUDCA. Adjust the dosage as needed based on your health goals and any guidance provided by your health practitioner.

The optimal range for ALT & AST is 10-26 IU/L. 

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

For the past couple of years, I've incorporated daily TUDCA use into my routine as a preventive measure against gallstones and gallbladder dysfunction. Due to a genetic predisposition, I face a higher risk for these issues. When gallbladder discomfort arises—a sensation or pain in the upper abdomen, typically on the right side—I respond promptly. High doses of Cellcore's TUDCA for 5-7 days, such as 2 capsules 3 times a day, along with castor oil packs (code PAOLA) on the liver/gallbladder overnight, have consistently alleviated the discomfort. Notably, regular, lower-dose TUDCA intake (2-4 capsules a day) has effectively prevented discomfort and significantly improved my digestion.
