Magnesium Essentials Guide
Jul 25, 2024Assessing magnesium levels accurately can be challenging. While several tests are available, their reliability varies. Download my full magnesium guide HERE.
In my experience, most people in the modern world are magnesium deficient, primarily due to soil depletion affecting food sources.
The gold standard for testing magnesium is the Magnesium Loading or Retention Test. In this test, an individual receives IV magnesium, and urine is collected over 24 hours. If 20-30% of the administered magnesium is retained, it indicates a deficiency.
However, most people do not have access to this test and opt for serum magnesium testing. In my practice, I use the following functional range for serum magnesium:
- Serum magnesium: 2-2.3 mg/dL
If serum magnesium is low, it indicates a deficiency. However, due to the body's efforts to maintain homeostasis, normal results do not rule out deficiency.
In addition to serum magnesium levels, I evaluate symptoms of magnesium insufficiency:
Mental and Emotional Symptoms:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Irritability
- Panic attacks
- Difficulty with mental concentration
- Memory loss
- Confusion
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
Muscular and Physical Symptoms:
- Muscle cramps and twitches
- Tremor
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Chest tightness
- Palpitations
- Certain types of cardiac arrhythmias
Respiratory and Sensory Symptoms:
- Hyperventilation
- Faintness
- Photosensitivity
- Tinnitus
Other Symptoms:
- Intestinal complaints
- Vitamin D resistance
